This research used a qualitative approach, and the narrative inquiry method. The researcher involved two students of English Department by looking at different backgrounds as participants. Data collection techniques in this study used interviews and documentation. Data analysis techniques in this study used data collection, data reduction, presenting data and drawing conclusions and verification. This study used Gibbons' self-directed learning theory as the main theoretical framework and was supported by other theories regarding self-directed learning. The results showed that students did most of the elements or stages of self-directed learning referring to Gibbons' theory. These elements include the conpent of student control over the learning experience, skill development, students' learning to challenge themselves to their best possible performance, student self-management, self-motivation and self-assessment. And self-directed learning is influenced by several factors, namely internal and external factors.
