EFL Students' Views on Plagiarism: A Case Study in Indonesia
Plagiarism is the most common problem in the academic world. Various scandals refer to plagiarism in college (Depnath and Caripa, 2017).This issue is becoming increasingly serious, and academics should look into it further. This study examines EFL students' views regarding plagiarism. The study used a qualitative methodology approach to gather more information and provide a thorough description of social or human issues. The data were collected at the English Language Education Department of one of the universities in Pekalongan, Indonesia. The participants of this study are five EFL students who are still writing their undergraduate theses. In collecting the data, the researcher were checked for plagiarism in the participants’ proposals using Turnitin. Then, the participants were interviewed to get the data needed to answer the research questions. In compiling this thesis, the researcher used the theory from Soelistyo (2011). The research findings reveal that EFL students' views on plagiarism are divided into two: based on their logical reasoning, and understanding of their knowledge of recent coursework. On the other hand, there is a lot of content on social media that supports plagiarism in addition to the availability of language barriers, which are the findings of researchers regarding the factors that influence EFL students to commit plagiarism. Besides that, there are three strategies for avoiding plagiarism: cite the source of the statement directly, be careful when quoting, and modify the sentences quoted. The researcher also analyzed their research proposals to examine the level of plagiarism by using Turnitin software. The result of which showed that the range of similarities index in students’ research proposals varied from 10 to 16 %. This research contributes to institutions' regulations that can suppress plagiarism in the campus environment. In addition, this research also contributes to looking at the level of plagiarism committed by students as a result of a lack of understanding about plagiarism.
