Junior High School Teachers' Challenges in The Implementation of Extensive Reading
The implementation of extensive reading well can support student success in learning foreign languages. This study aims to report on the challenges of junior high school teachers in implementing extensive reading and solutions to overcome the challenges faced. The data were analyzed using Miles, Huberman, and Saldana (2014) theories. In addition, researchers also used the theories of Renandya, Hidayati, and Ivone (2021) to explore the challenges teachers face in applying extensive reading. Data were obtained from interviews and observation conducted by three junior high school teachers in Pekalongan, Central Java. Using case studies, researchers identify several challenges and solutions. The results of the study show that there are several challenges and solutions. The challenges teachers face in implementing extensive reading include low motivation, low reading material, limited class hours, teachers considered to have no role in the implementation, lack of knowledge, and the demand to apply all the principles of extensive reading. Solutions to the challenges already mentioned: always giving encouragement and awards, utilizing online libraries, doing reading activities at home, creating unique reading materials and making discussions, re-digging into extensive reading, and not applying all the principles of extensive reading. Based on the study, researchers concluded that the main challenge for teachers in implementing extensive reading is the low interest in reading students due to everyday vocabulary, so it is difficult to understand the text. In overcoming this is to encourage students to apply reading habits and give rewards.
