EFL Learners' Perceptions on The Use of Instagram Video Recording in Learning Speaking Skills
This research described EFL learners’ perceptions on the use of Instagram video recording in learning speaking skills. In this research, the researcher explored the use of Instagram video recording as a tool for practicing English speaking from the point of view of learners. This study used a descriptive qualitative method and an interview process for the data collection. The participants of this study involved the students in one of the Senior High Schools in Brebes, Central Java. The results of this study were divided into six main aspects. The first was the implementation of an Instagram video recording which involved the process of logging into the Instagram account, observing the video assignment from the researcher, making videos, uploading videos, and commenting on friends’ videos. The second was the advantages of Instagram video recording that were useful for learning speaking such as correcting word mistakes and wrong pronunciation. The learners could also practice speaking outside the classroom anytime and anywhere. The third was the disadvantages of using Instagram video recording. Here, some learners found out the pornographic contents that sometimes appeared on Instagram. Then, they said that the use of Instagram consumed a lot of internet quota, and some learners found it difficult to understand the material that was delivered online. The fourth was the challenges of using Instagram video recording that were some learners spent a lot of time using Instagram video recording. Besides that, the Instagram video recording prevented them from focusing on learning. The learners also said there were negative comments that sometimes appeared on the comment box, and some of them had problems in accessing the internet when they used Instagram. The fifth was the effects of the use of Instagram video recording. The learners felt more confident in speaking English and their motivation to speak English was also increased. The sixth was their English speaking skills that changed after the implementation of Instagram video recordings, such as vocabulary, pronunciation, and fluency skills.
