High School EFL Students' Problems in Speaking Skills: A Case Study
Being able to speak English is something special. However, there are some problems in studying it. This study aimed to explore the problem of speaking English and learner solutions in dealing with these problems. This research approach uses a qualitative approach. Data were obtained through semi-structured interviews and observations and data analysis using grounded theory. The research object used three students of class XI MIPA (mathematics & science). The findings of this study indicated that students have problems speaking English. Students also have strategies used to deal with these problems. These problems include linguistic and psychological problems. In linguistic problems, students experience limited vocabulary, inaccurate pronunciation, minimal grammar knowledge, not fluently communicating ideas, and confusion in sorting several sentences into coherence. In psychological problems, students experienced shyness that interfered with their performance, low self-confidence, fear of making mistakes, fluctuating learning motivation, and worries about getting negative evaluations from teachers and friends. In dealing with these problems, students have strategies that they used to minimize errors and overcame psychological problems that interfered with their performance when speaking English. This research is useful for knowing the concept of speaking and the problems in speaking and the solutions that can be applied by both teachers and English tutors.
