AN ANALYSIS OF SPEECH ACTS USED BY SPEAK ENGLISH WITH TIFFANI CHANNEL IN TEACHING ENGLISH
Teacher’s speech acts have crucial role in building English teaching effectively. This research aimed to analyze the types of speech acts used by Speak English with Tiffani in teaching English. Moreover, this study investigated the functions of the speech acts in English teaching. The research employed qualitative method. The data was collected by watching, transcripting, reading, and marking teacher’s utterances in the video. The data was analysed through data reduction, data display, drawing conclusions, and verifying the findings. Furthermore, the data was analyzed refers to Speech Acts Theory by John Austin (1962) and J.R Searle (1979). Based on the data analysis, there were only four types of speech acts found in the teacher’s utterances during the teaching, 46.38% representative speech acts, directive speech act with 40.85%, expressive speech act is about 10.64% and the last of speech act, commissive was only 2.13%. In addition, each type of speech acts found represented the function of speech acts in teaching English. It is measured according to the principles of asynchronous learning from UNSW (2021). The function of speech acts that were successfully implemented by Tiffani were engaging students in active learning; building on students’ existing knowledge; linking learning to professional, disciplinary, industry and/or personal contexts; challenging and supporting student learning; communicating expectations and requirements; serving for student diversity.
